Robert Floyd Long Family. About 1916 Robert F.,
Tena (Simonson), Donald and Vivian


Robert Floyd Long was born in Indepen-
dence, Grayson County, Virginia on October
21, 1882 to Calvin Floyd Long and Mary E.
Kennedy Long the 8th of 14 children. One
sister died at infancy. He came to the
Nebraska Sandbills area by train with his
parents and brothers and sisters about 1895
at the early age of 13 years.

Bob later had a dray wagon and team of
horses in Mullen and also worked at the livery
barn. He would drive Dr. Walker in a horse
and buggy to make his rounds out in the
country. Dr. Walker often napped while Bob
drove especially at night.

He homesteaded in Cherry County and on
March 30, 1910 married Tena Simonson,
daughter of Simon O. and Sarah Simonson.
Tena was born in Newman Grove, September
13, 1887 and had worked in Morrison's Dry
Goods store in Mullen. Tena and Bob were
married at the Simonson Ranch near the
Middle Loup River.

To this union two children were born. They
were Donald S. Long, born September 12,
1911 and Vivian Long, born March 5, 1916.

In 1925 the family moved to Wyoming for
Tena's health. Bob, Don and Vivian returned
to Mullen in the spring of 1929, after Ten's
death on September 28, 1928.

Donald graduated from Mullen schools in
1930. Bob and Don had a trucking business
at this time. In the fall of 1935, Donald
worked at the Mullen Coop. Then in 1942 he
went into the Army. He served in England,
France and Germany and was discharged in
1945.

He had a beer parlor for 5 years. Then
Donald worked at Mathews Chevrolet Ga-
rage as parts man for 20 1/2 years.

On October 14, 1954, Donald Long married
Glayds Bordes Acher in Livermore, Califor-
nia and they have continued to live in Mullen
in the South East part of town ever since.
Gladys worked at Pioneer Memorial Hospital
and Rest Home as a registered nurse for 14
years, then retired.

Vivian Long graduated from high school in
Mullen in 1933. Then taught school for seven
years. She married Percy Miller of Seneca,
Nebraska on May 28, 1940. Two children
were born to this union. Marjorie Miller, born
1942 and Robert E. Miller born
1944. Vivian and Percy Miller
lived on a ranch on the north side of Swan
Lake, north of Seneca. Also they maintained
a home in Mullen when the children went to
school. They live in Mullen most of the time
now.

Marjorie Miller graduated from Mullen
schools and went on to the University of
Nebraska at Lincoln. She graduated and
taught Home Economics. She and Joe Hult-
quist were married on July 26, 1964 in
Mullen. They have three boys, Jon, Rob and
Marc and are now living in Minden, Nebras-
ka.

Robert Miller graduated from Mullen
schools and the University of Nebraska and
law school and became a C.P.A. Bob and
Linda Fechner were married in Syracuse,
Nebraska on June 21, 1969. They have a
daughter, Annette and a son, Brian. They live
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Robert Floyd Long and Hooker County
Commissioner for many years. He passed
away on February 13, 1967.
