Otto and Emma (Schmidt) Maire Wedding 1884


Otto Maire and Emma Sophia Schmidt
were born in Wilsnack, Brandenburg, Ger-
many in 1865 and 1866 respectively. They
came on a boat to the United States when
they were about 18 years old.

They were married in Webster Co. Nebras-
ka in 1884 and settled at Blue Hill, Nebr.

Otto delivered cream from the farms by
horse and wagon to the Creamery in Blue Hill
until 1906 when they moved to Mullen and
homesteaded about 13 miles southwest of
town.

Joe Piel came out from Blue Hill and
helped build their wood frame house. The
men walked about 2 miles each day to go to
work on the house as they stayed at a
neighbors until they had the house complete
enough to stay in.

The Maire's had 8 children; Mollie B.,
August F., Henry O., Otto, Carl, Anna, and
Herman. One child died in infancy.

Mollie went back to Blue Hill in June of
1906 and married Julius (Joe) Piel. They
lived on farms near Blue Hill until 1922 when
they came to Mullen. They bought Otto
Maire's homestead and also that of August
and Henry Maire, which belonged to Otto at
that time.

Otto and Emma bought the Hewitt place
about seven miles southwest of Mullen and
lived there until their passing. Otto on June
11, 1933 and Emma on March 18, 1934.
