MATHEWS CHEVROLET GARAGE AND STATION

Mathews Chevrolet - 1935

Harry M. Mathews owner of a Chevrolet
garage in the 20's, built a new addition to the
original building he had. This was a great
improvement for large office space and the
western part of the building was large
working space for the Mechanics. lt was built
about 1929. Mr. Mathews held a big free
dance to celebrate its opening.

In 1935, a new station was built at a cost
of several hundred dollars. It was one of the
latest designs of service stations to be found
and was modernized throughout. It was
called the Twenty-four Hour Service Station.
To share the opening with the public, Mr.
Mathews offered every car and truck owner
a free grease job, without being obliged to
purchase other station products. This offer
lasted three days. The station was built just
south of the new garage, the headquarters of
business.

The Garage still stands as it was, Paul
Schmoker now the owner of Schmoker
Chevrolet Oldsmobile, Inc. The station was
bought by Ray Sexton and moved to his back
lot. The location where it stood has under-
gone a new face lift with gas self-service
pumps.
