GARNER, GLEN V. AND ELNORA JOAN (PEARMAN)

Born to Lena Leota (Kerns) and William
Clarence Pearman on 1929 at
Alliance, Nebraska was Elnora Joan, the last
child of a family of seven. She attended
country schools in her early years. The family
moved into Mullen and she attended Mullen
Grade School at the age of ten and graduated
from Mullen High School with the class of
1949.

After courting about 2 years she was united
in marriage to Glen Veryl Garner on May 31,
1949. Glen was the son of Wilson Curtis
Garner and Francis Meriel (Necklace) Gar-
ner, born 1929 at Alliance, Nebras-
ka.

Their first home after their marriage was
at the Wolfenden Ranch at Kennedy, Neb-
raska. The address of the ranch is now
Valentine, Nebraska. Seems like several
families started out at the Wolfenden ranch!
They then moved to the Dutch (Lyle) Phipps
ranch north of Whitman, Nebraska. While
working there on 1950 their daughter
Billie Joanne was born at the home of Jessie
Phipps at Mullen, Nebraska.

In September of 1950 they moved from
Mullen to Mississippi. While down there
Glen also worked in Alabama and Louisiana.
It was so hot in Mississippi they had a negro
maid to come in and do the ironing. She only
charged 10 cents an hour. We should have
enjoyed the maid service because I'm sure it
will be the only one we will have!

In May of 1951 we returned to Mullen.
Glen began working for Lee Boyer on the
ranch raising turkeys. He worked for Lee
about 3 1/2 years.

On 1952 a son Verle Eugene was
born at Mullen at the house across the street
from Jessie Phipps which now is the Lodge
Hall.

We then moved to the Bill Manning Ranch
north of Mullen. The ranch is now owned by
Bert and Helen Dent. We then moved back
into Mullen and Glen began working for the
Farmers Elevator owned by Lewis Folk. He
worked there 3 1/2 years then went to work for
Carlson Implement owned by Jack Carlson.
He was employed there 10 1/2 years. Joan work
also at the Mullen Cafe for Bud Gibson and
Lee's Meat Market for 12 years.

While working at the Farmers Elevator
they bought their home about 1957. It was
located in the southwest corner of Mullen. It
only had two rooms when we first moved
there. It also had an outdoor toilet which was
rather cold in the Nebraska winters! As times
got better they increased the size of their
home and got indoor plumbing. What a relief!
We still make our home there today.

In 1968 their daughter Billie graduated
from Mullen High School after attending
school all of her life in Mullen. She then went
to North Platte, Nebraska and attended
North Platte Beauty Academy. She passed
her State Boards in October 1969. She
worked in North Platte at the Bob-Etlle
Beauty Shop for 1 year. She then returned to
Mullen and opened the Sandhills Beauty
Shop in November 1970, which she still owns
and operates today.

Verle has helped his Dad with his mowing
contract for 11 years and is now helping run
the bowling alley in Mullen. He graduated
from Mullen High School in 1970 after
attending school in Mullen all his life.

In 1975 Joan and Glen moved to Suther-
land, Nebraska. Glen worked at the Gerald
Gentleman Power Plant as a welder. They
returned to Mullen in 1980 and moved to the
S-Bar Ranch formerly the Jim Snyder
Ranch, south of Whitman, Nebraska. Glen
worked on the pivots for irrigation and also
contracted the haying in the summer for the
S-Bar for 11 years.

They moved back into Mullen in August
1982 and began running Hondo Lanes Bowl-
ing Alley and are making their home at the
house they bought. Glen is also working at
Toby's Automotive Store in the day time.
