Elick, son of William H. and Millissa
"Lissie" (Mathis) Sexton was born Febr. 14.
1870 at Johnson County, Illinois. William
and Melissa and the two oldest boys, John
and Elick came to Kansas on the train in
1870. They were the last of the family to
come. On arrival to Kansas they were faced
with crossing a stream. As they were doing so,
the wagon upset, throwing John and Elick
into the water. John was three years old and
Elick nine months. No one hurt - just real
wet. William Homesteaded a plot (80 acres)
of ground east of Acme, Kansas. Lived in a
dugout at Acme, there were still Indians here.
They would ride by hollering and shooting.
Didn't know when they would hit some one
or the long horn Texas Cattle. The cattle
would walk over the dug-out and afraid they
would come through the top.

Then as time went on they homesteaded a
farm just north, what was later to become a
small town of Acme, Ks. It had a small house
on it and after they moved in the small house
there was an awful wind and hail storm came
up. They all went to cave but Elick, he came
later. Mellissa said, "Come on, Elick, we are
going to the cave, put something on your
head." So he put his handkerchief on his head
- a lot of good that would have done.
